The following is also posted on Dr. Will Kirby’s laser tattoo removal blog: A few times a month a patient will present with a skin condition that arises after getting a tattoo. The most common complaint they have is itching, but I have seen some cases so severe that it appeared verroucous or wart-like. Some patients will state that their new ink caused eczema. Occasionally I will have to take a biopsy to rule out psoriasis or sarcoidosis but the majority of time these cases prove to be an allergy to the tattoo ink.
I have seen allergies to blue (or Cobalt), green (or Chromium), purple (or Manganese) and yellow (or Cadmium Sulfide) colors, but the most common color associated with tattoo ink allergies is red (or Mercury). Patients with tattoo ink allergies are not candidates for laser tattoo removal and instead have to use topical therapies or have the tattoo surgically excised.
