The resident laser tattoo removal expert at Dr. TATTOFF, Dr. Will Kirby, notes the following on his blog:

In the November ‘08 edition of Dermatologic Surgery magazine, there is an article about attempting to remove tattoos with tattoo removal creams (such as Wrecking Balm, Tat B Gone, Nuviderm, etc) entitled Hypertrophic Scar After Chemical Tattoo Removal. The authors of the tattoo removal article, Saini, et al, noted that “there are various modalities for tattoo removal. The gold standard of tattoo removal is the Q-switched laser,” which just happens to be what is used for laser tattoo removal at all Dr. TATTOFF clincs. The article specifically discusses the Rejuvi Tattoo Removal System (at tattoo removal cream system) and they report on a patient who developed hypertrophic scars after treatment with this system. They go on to point out that the chemical cream removal systems have been associated with “hypertrophic scar formation, hypopigmentation, and even full-thickness burns.” 

The patient in this picture went to a tattoo studio and inquired about having his tattoo removed. They informed him that they could inject a salt solution into his tattoo and it would be gone in three sessions. Three sessions later he showed up at a Dr. TATTOFF clinic requesting information on laser tattoo removal.
