Do tattoo removal creams work?

Some patients who come into Dr. TATTOFF clinics for laser tattoo removal ask us if tattoo removal creams work well. The short answer is that we wouldn't be in business if they did. In fact, particularly since the administration of these creams isn't medically supervised, there are often some pretty serious side effects that can occur. Take for instance this young lady's experience. She's been using a tattoo removal cream called Nuviderm regularly for almost a year and now her tattoo looks...well, slightly blurry and a little darker somehow. If you read some of her very detailed blog entries you'll see that she got a pretty serious infection due to use of the tattoo removal cream, and had to go to a doctor. Of one of her visits to the doctor, she says "The nurse made it very clear that this is probably going to scar terribly." For the amount of money she spent on the product and doctor's visit, she likely could have had full laser tattoo removal at a Dr. TATTOFF clinic. The tattoo would have been gone by now and she would have zero scarring, side effects, or discomfort. If you're considering trying a tattoo removal cream, we encourage you to attempt to find one actual person who this method has worked for first. We also encourage you to learn more about laser tattoo removal. You'll be happy you did!

Wrecking Balm, Tat2BeGone, TatBGone, Nuviderm... they are all garbage! I highly recommend that you do NOT use a cream to try to remove a tattoo. You'll have scarring and discoloration. Unfortunately I now know this first hand. If you need your tattoo removed get laser tattoo treatment at Dr. Tattoff or just leave the tattoo!

Honestly, I don't understand how these companies are staying in business. We see people come in all the time in the Irvine office who have used "removal" creams and honestly they have either no fading, or their skin just doesn't look right. I really recommend doing your research before starting any procedure- especially if you do decide that you want to use creams. After working at Dr. Tattoff for nearly a year now I can honestly say that lasers really are the best way to go for tattoo removal.
